Fuji Ryu BBQ

On June 13th 2004

Once again the yearly picnic was held at Sensei Tony's house. The picnic was a great success. The instructors, students both past and present and their families attended. They enjoyed the food, the day, the stories and the company.

Thank you Sensei Tony and his wife Julie for opening your house to us.

With Sadness
September 2001
Sensei Kenny Passes Away:

Sensei Kenny started his training at the original Fuji Dojo in the Bronx, NY, under Grand Master Scrima and received his Black Belt in the early 1970's. He remained very active through the 1980's and was awarded his 4th degree Black Belt from O'Sensei Philip Scrima. Though not as active over the last 10 years, he never missed a Black Belt test, gave his support for many Ryu functions, and maintained close contact with many of his Dojo brothers and sisters.

He passed away in September of 2001 and will be sadly missed.

Fuji Ryu BBQ
September 2001
Contrary to popular belief, jujutsu students don’t always just flip people. Sometimes they flip burgers!
As was the case on September 9th as the Dojo’s gathered together at Sensei Bottan’s house for a relaxing Barbecue. The BBQ offered everyone a chance to get to know each other off the mat. The food was wonderful and consisted of the typical BBQ fare. Many of the attendees also brought their significant others and/or their children. It was the perfect ending to a great summer. Back to the Dojo we go to work off those hamburgers and Italian sausages!!!
Cherry Blossom Festival Demo
Brooklyn Botanic Garden Sakura Matsuri:

FujiRyu last demonstrated at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens (BBG) Sakura Matsuri (Cherry Blossom Festival) May 1999. The Cherry Blossom Festival at the BBG is held every spring in order to celebrate the flowering of the Japanese Cherry Blossom tree. It is a celebration of all things Japanese and consists of a two-day celebration with Japanese arts & Crafts, fashions, food, entertainment, games and, of course, martial arts!

The major events are held in the heart of the BBG at the Cherry Esplanade, a huge grassy field surrounded by beautiful Cherry Blossom trees from Japan. Thousands of people flock to the garden from all over New York to take part in this exciting event. FujiRyu Jujutsu, a frequent demonstrator at the event, was again invited by the BBG to entertain the crowds on both days of the event. It was an exciting weekend for all the students and Instructors, but especially so for the students new to Fuji Ryu. Both the Brooklyn and the Bronx Dojo’s showed off their skills to a huge and excited festival crowd. The crowd really went wild for the children’s demonstration and the women’s demonstration, which showed small women throwing off larger opponents. Everyone’s favorite part was when Sensei Tony finished off the demo by wowing the crowd with advanced black belt techniques. It was definitely a wonderful weekend for all. Even though it was a terrific demonstration, it was still hard to compete with the show the Cherry Blossom Trees were putting on!

O-Sensei Scrima Visit
June 16th, 2001
O-Sensei Phil Scrima will be visiting the Long Island Dojo on Saturday December 8th. All students of the Brooklyn, Long Island and Bronx Dojo are invited and encouraged to attend this special event.

Many of the students first had the opportunity to meet O-Sensei Scrima for the first time on Saturday, June 16th, 2001 when O-Sensei Scrima (retired) visited the Long Island Location. The Brooklyn, Bronx and Long Island Dojo's gathered together to honor the founder of Fuji Ryu Jujutsu. The students demonstrated their skills as they participated in class, and were very honored as O-Sensei assisted them with corrections and technique demonstrations. Sensei Tony Bottan presented O-Sensei with a plaque from the Instructors and students of Fuji Ryu Jujutsu thanking him for his years of dedication to the art of Jujutsu.

Dojo Field Trip
June 2001
The Long Island Dojo visits Brooklyn Dojo:
The Long Island Dojo braved the infamous New York traffic as they packed their gi’s into their cars and headed out to attend class at the Brooklyn Dojo. This was the first time the Long Island Dojo visited the Brooklyn location and they were happy to make the trip. The students from both locations had the opportunity to workout with students of different physical builds and skill levels. This allows the students to learn what works best for the different body types. You would use a different technique to defend against an assailant, who is for example, 6’2" & 150 pounds, then, an assailant who is 5’7 and 250 pounds. Many of the students were encouraged to see how everyone, including themselves have improved their techniques over time.

The visit was also a time to welcome and encourage students as well as hand out some congratulations to those students recently promoted.
