Grand Master Philip Scrima began his long association with Japanese martial arts in the early 1960's with the study of Karate. After witnessing Jujutsu, he knew that this was the martial art for him. He proceeded to study various styles over the years and developed his own system which was named Fuji Ryu. The System was named after the first school he opened in 1964, Fuji Dojo. The school was located in the Bronx, NY, where there continues to be active black belts teaching and training. He studied for a time with the late Sosuishitsu Ryu Jujutsu Master Mitch Fleming in New Jersey. This style was the most influential on the development of Fuji Ryu. He also studied Hakko Ryu Jujutsu and received a 4th dan in that style. He was also recognized as a 2nd dan from Jujutsu legends Bud Estes and Ray Law of the American Judo and Jujutsu Federation (AJJF). He was named the Kata Director of the North East Division of the AJJF and taught the Black Belts in this region. The late Professor Florendo Visitacion of the AJJF and the founder of Vee Arnis Jitsu, gave Grandmaster Scrima a letter stating his Fuji Ryu was one of the finest Jujutsu systems he had ever seen. Fuji Ryu began in the Bronx but has been taught all over New York State, Nevada, Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Germany and Italy. A number of schools and black belts continue to carry on the Fuji Ryu tradition. The Grand Master continued to remain active and frequently visited with some of his higher ranked students and their dojo's even up until his passing on May 19th, 2006. |
