FAQ

  1. What is Fuji Ryu Ju Jitsu?
Fuji Ryu is a neoclassical ju jitsu in the style of Japanese martial arts. We incorporate punches, kicks, blocks, joint locks, and throws to teach students to effectively defend themselves in case of an attack.
  2. Do I need to be young and in shape for this?
Absolutely not. We accept all students at all ages, all fitness levels, and all levels of readiness. We are fully ready to modify courses to fit you.
  3. Do I have to compete in tournaments?
No, you do not. Unlike the sport of BJJ, in which you may be expected to participate in tournaments against competitors in a full-contact format, Fuji Ryu is a highly effective self-defense martial art, and as such does not directly lend itself to full-contact competition. However, we do provide training for competitions with a significant success rate for students that wish to go in that direction. See the location tab for a listing of training specialties offered at our different locations.
  4. Do I have to have martial arts experience?
Not at all. We accept students of all experience levels. For many of our students, Fuji Ryu is their first introduction to the world of martial arts.
  5. My goal isn’t self-defense. I just want to (fill in the blank). Can you accommodate that?
Please understand that, first and foremost, we are a martial arts system with a strong focus on real self-defense. As such, if learning a martial art is not one of your primary goals, Fuji may not be right for you. We do provide weapons training, competition sports, good physical conditioning, confidence building, and the skills to be adaptable and flexible in today’s world, so critical for success. If these skill sets fit your needs, then we are the right place for you.
  6. Do you have classes for children?
Yes. We accommodate children as young as 4 in the Bronx, of 13 and older in Brooklyn, and 16 years and older in Valley Stream.
  7. What is tuition for classes?
Tuition varies depending on the dojo’s location. Please contact the dojo in which you are interested to inquire about rates. We offer a free class, so you can come visit during class times and try a class too.
  8. Do I have to sign a contract?
We do not have a contract, and your first class is free.
  9. How do I get started?
Meet us at one of our dojos during our hours of operations listed in the footer of this page.
